White Desert Overnight Safari

The White Desert of Farafra, three hundred and sixty kilometres south-west of Cairo, is one of the strangest landscapes on earth — a windswept plain of chalk outcrops carved by ten million years of erosion into surreal shapes: mushrooms, ships, camels, wind-polished pinnacles glowing white under the moon. It is a national park; it is spellbinding; and it is best experienced with a night under the stars.

Day 1: Morning: You are collected from your Cairo hotel at 06:00 and driven west along the desert road toward Bahariya Oasis, a five-hour journey through progressively wilder terrain. Your Egyptologist and Bedouin driver-guide accompany you throughout. En route you stop at the Roman-era cemetery of Bawiti, home of the Golden Mummies discovered in 1996.

Afternoon: You arrive in Bahariya for lunch at a local restaurant serving traditional oasis cuisine — bedouin bread baked in a sand oven, molokhia with rabbit, hibiscus tea. From here you transfer to a 4x4 vehicle and enter the Black Desert — a landscape of volcanic hills strewn with dark basalt boulders — before continuing to Crystal Mountain, a small ridge of transparent quartz crystals, and to the Aqabat Valley, a pass between cliffs where the transition from Black Desert to White Desert takes place.

Evening: You reach the White Desert National Park in the late afternoon and set up camp among the chalk formations, choosing a site — the ‘chicken and mushroom’, the ‘ship’, the ‘monoliths’ — that your guide judges best for the light. Dinner is cooked over an open fire — grilled chicken, vegetables baked in embers, rice, salad, tea — and served on carpets under the stars. The sky here is one of the darkest in the region; the Milky Way is visible in full, and desert foxes often come to the edge of the firelight. You sleep in sleeping bags on mats in the open, or in a Bedouin tent if you prefer.

Day 2: Morning: You wake before dawn to see the chalk formations turn from silver to gold as the sun rises. After breakfast — bread, jam, cheese, tea — you continue by 4x4 across the desert, visiting further formations and, on request, the Ain Serw hot springs, before starting the drive back through Bahariya to Cairo. You arrive at your hotel in the late afternoon.

Photography is extraordinary throughout; the two golden hours and the star field at midnight are the highlights. Practical advice: pack warm layers — the desert is very cold at night, even in summer — and closed shoes; a headtorch and a small day pack are useful. Modest dress is respectful. Family suitability is very good from age ten upward; the camping is basic but safe and the adventure is memorable. Accessibility is limited — this is a rough overland trip. Best months are October through April; summer nights are agreeable but daytime temperatures are extreme. Book at least two weeks ahead as departures run in small groups.
