Cairo Islamic and Coptic Tour

Cairo is one of the great palimpsest cities of the world, and this private full-day tour walks you through two of its most powerful layers: the Christian community that has continued unbroken here for two thousand years, and the mediaeval Islamic city that was, in its time, the largest urban civilisation on earth. Your Egyptologist guide is trained in comparative religion as well as archaeology, and the day is paced as a slow reading of the city’s spiritual geography.

Morning: You are collected from your hotel and driven to Old Cairo, the small Roman-walled district known as Babylon-in-Egypt. Here, on ground where the Holy Family is said to have sheltered during their flight to Egypt, sits the extraordinary Hanging Church — the Al-Muallaqa — a fifth-century basilica suspended above a Roman gatehouse. Your guide walks you through its inlaid iconostasis, its ebony pulpit and its long, unbroken tradition of Coptic liturgy. A short walk brings you to the Church of St Sergius and Bacchus, built above the cave where tradition holds the Holy Family rested; and then to Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of the oldest active synagogues in the Middle East and the site where a nine-hundred-year archive of Jewish life — the Cairo Geniza — was discovered in the nineteenth century. The Coptic Museum, across the courtyard, provides the artistic context: illuminated gospels, textiles, wood-carving and stone.

Afternoon: A short drive north takes you to Islamic Cairo, entering through Bab Zuweila, the mediaeval southern gate. From here you walk the length of Al-Muizz Street, one of the largest concentrations of mediaeval Islamic architecture in the world — Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman monuments layered along a single spine. Your guide interprets the great madrasas and mausolea: the complex of Sultan Qalawun, the mosque of Sultan Barquq, the sabil-kuttab of Abd al-Rahman Katkhuda. Lunch is served in a restored Mamluk house or on a rooftop overlooking the street.

The afternoon culminates at the Citadel of Saladin, the mediaeval fortress that has dominated the Cairo skyline for eight hundred years, and at the Mosque of Muhammad Ali on its summit — a nineteenth-century Ottoman mosque whose alabaster interior turns amber in the afternoon light. From the terrace you look west across the entire city to the pyramids on the horizon.

Evening: The day closes at Khan el-Khalili, the great mediaeval bazaar. Your guide will lead you to the workshops that still practise inlay, silverwork and mother-of-pearl craft. Tea at El Fishawy, in continuous operation since 1773, is the traditional way to end the visit.

Photography is permitted throughout, though flash is discouraged inside churches and mosques. Practical advice: modest dress is essential — shoulders and knees covered, headscarf for women in mosques (provided). Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable, as much of the day is on foot over uneven flagstone. Family suitability is very good from age ten upward; the sequence of stories keeps children engaged. Accessibility is limited in the older churches and along the mediaeval streets; alternative routes can be arranged. Best months are October through April.
