The Grand Egyptian Museum, on the plateau above Giza, is the most ambitious museum project of the twenty-first century — a fifty-hectare complex housing more than one hundred thousand objects, including the complete Tutankhamun collection displayed together for the first time since its discovery in 1922. Morning: You are collected from your hotel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle and driven to the museum entrance on the Cairo–Alexandria desert road, directly beneath the pyramids. Your guide begins in the atrium, dominated by the eleven-metre colossal statue of Ramses II, then leads you up the Grand Staircase — an ascending gallery of eighty-seven monumental pieces arranged chronologically from the Old Kingdom to the Ptolemaic era. Afternoon: You enter the main galleries — twelve rooms devoted to society, kingship, and belief across the same span of history. Your guide focuses your attention on the pieces that reward close reading: the Narmer palette, the Old Kingdom triads, the reliefs from Hatshepsut’s mortuary temple, the Amarna heads of Akhenaten, the astonishing survival of the funerary furniture of Yuya and Thuya. The centrepiece of any visit is the Tutankhamun galleries — for the first time in a hundred years the complete grave assemblage of the boy king is displayed together. The gold mask, the nested coffins, the alabaster canopic chest, the six dismantled chariots, the eighty scarabs, the sandals, the beds, the throne inlaid with faience and glass, and the more than five thousand small objects excluded from earlier displays: all in one place, curated as a single narrative. Evening: Time permitting, your guide will take you to the panoramic terrace at the rear of the museum, where the three pyramids stand in full profile above the roofline of the galleries — a photograph impossible before the museum opened. Return to your hotel in Cairo or Giza is included.

Photography is permitted in most galleries without flash; a small supplement covers professional cameras. Practical advice: dress smart-casual; the galleries are cool. Comfortable shoes are essential — the floor plan is generous and you will walk a great deal.
