Turkish Night Show

A cultural evening in a Cappadocian cave hall — the traditional celebration of an unforgettable region.

The Turkish Night Show is a set-piece Cappadocian evening — a three-hour dinner and folk-performance programme staged in a converted cave restaurant carved into the volcanic tuff, and one of the most enjoyable and least clichéd cultural evenings anywhere in Türkiye when it is done well. Our version uses the region's better cave venues (Uranos Sarıkaya, Yasar Baba, or an equivalent), where the food, the music and the choreography are all held to a serious standard.

Late afternoon — hotel pickup. After a hotel pickup around 19:00 (adjusted for season), we drive to the cave restaurant — usually fifteen to twenty-five minutes from Uçhisar, Göreme or Ürgüp. Arrival is unhurried and includes a welcome drink of Turkish sparkling wine, fruit juice or a soft alternative.

Evening — dinner in the cave. Guests are seated by group at a private table inside the main cave hall — a domed volcanic chamber, decorated in traditional Cappadocian textiles, with tiered seating around a central stage. Dinner is a set menu of Cappadocian and Turkish specialities: a long procession of hot and cold mezes (hummus, muhammara, ezme, cacık, stuffed vine leaves, red-lentil köfte, cheeses); a main course choice of grilled meats, testi kebab (slow-cooked lamb in a sealed clay pot broken open at the table), or a vegetarian alternative; and a Cappadocian dessert with Turkish coffee. Unlimited local wine (Kalecik Karası and Emir grapes from the Nevşehir vineyards), raki, beer, soft drinks and mineral water are included in the standard package.

The performance — five sequences over ninety minutes. The show runs alongside dinner. Standard programmes include five sequences:

1. Anatolian folk dances — regional dances from the Aegean, Black Sea, eastern Anatolia and Cappadocia itself, performed by a troupe of ten to fifteen professional dancers in period costume, each region introduced by an English-speaking presenter.
2. The Mevlevi Sema (whirling dervishes) — the classical Sufi ceremony from Konya, performed by trained dervishes as a devotional ritual rather than a floor-show. This section is considered sacred: photography with flash is discouraged.
3. A henna ceremony — the traditional Anatolian pre-wedding ritual in miniature, with a volunteer bride from the audience.
4. A belly-dance sequence — the classic Turkish oryantal tradition, performed by a professional soloist.
5. A "world dance" finale — an audience-participation folk medley that closes the evening on a high note.

Return. Guests are back at their hotel by 22:30 to 23:30.

How it runs. Private hotel pickup and return in a comfortable minivan; entrance and full dinner package including unlimited local beverages; reserved seating on the tiered rows nearest the stage; all show sequences included. The venue is fully wheelchair-accessible on request; vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten-sensitive menus can all be arranged with advance notice.

Family suitability. Excellent for older children and teenagers — the show is family-friendly, and the belly-dance sequence is choreographed rather than provocative. Younger children may find the total duration long; a shorter half-programme is available on request.

Photography. The venue lights are warm and low. Non-flash photography is welcomed throughout the folk sequences; flash and video are discouraged during the Sema. Bring a fast lens if you have one, or simply enjoy the evening without a camera.

Best season. Year-round. Winter evenings inside the cave — with the fireplace lit and the volcanic stone radiating heat — are particularly memorable. Summer evenings are pleasantly cool in the cave regardless of outside temperature.
