Bosphorus Cruise

A private two-hour Bosphorus cruise reading Istanbul from the only angle that makes complete sense — the water.

The Bosphorus is a working strait, not a canal — a natural sea passage between the Black Sea and the Marmara, thirty-two kilometres long, at its narrowest 700 metres wide, and continuously used since prehistory as the maritime hinge between Europe and Asia. Half of Istanbul's history is legible only from the water, and this private cruise is designed to read it slowly.

Late morning or afternoon — private boat, private captain. We meet at a small Bosphorus pier (Kabataş, Beşiktaş, Ortaköy or Bebek — chosen for your hotel) and board a private motor yacht with a professional English-speaking captain and, on request, a licensed local guide. Group size determines the vessel; the smallest boats seat six, the largest thirty in a classic gulet layout.

European shoreline — Beşiktaş to Bebek. The cruise begins with the palace shoreline: Dolmabahçe (the last Ottoman imperial residence, its wedding-cake Neo-Baroque façade six hundred metres long), Çırağan Palace (now the Kempinski hotel), Yıldız Palace hidden in its hillside park, and the small Ottoman-era mosque of Ortaköy directly beneath the first Bosphorus bridge. We pass the neighbourhoods of Kuruçeşme and Arnavutköy — rows of restored wooden yalıs (waterside mansions) that some Istanbul families have held since the eighteenth century — and continue past Bebek's café-lined bay.

Rumeli Hisarı and the second bridge. At the strait's narrowest point, we reach Rumeli Hisarı, the fifteenth-century fortress that Sultan Mehmed II built in four months in 1452 to close the Bosphorus in preparation for the conquest of Constantinople. Directly opposite, on the Asian shore, Anadolu Hisarı — the older fortress from 1394 — sits at the mouth of the Göksu river. We pass under the second Bosphorus bridge (Fatih Sultan Mehmed) and, on the longer cruise, continue to the third (Yavuz Sultan Selim).

Asian shoreline — Beylerbeyi and Kandilli. The return runs along the Asian shore: the Küçüksu summer palace on its lawn beside the river, the Beylerbeyi Palace (the sultans' summer residence in Ottoman marble), the hillside neighbourhood of Kandilli, the Maiden's Tower in the Marmara at the mouth of the strait, and finally the old Haydarpaşa station and the domes of the historic peninsula rising across the water.

Photography. The two-hour route is designed for photography: golden-hour light on the wooden yalıs, the palaces from the water rather than the road, the bridges in wide-angle, the fishermen on the Galata Bridge, and — if you time the cruise for late afternoon — the sunset over the historic peninsula from the deck.

How it runs. Private motor yacht with professional captain; optional licensed local guide who can be added for a running commentary; refreshments and light snacks on board (Turkish tea, coffee, cold drinks, seasonal fruit); life jackets and safety equipment. Duration is a nominal two hours; three- and four-hour extensions run further north, and dinner charters run into the evening.

Practical. No dress code; a light layer for the breeze on the water even in summer; sunglasses; a hat; and, if you plan to disembark for coffee on the Asian side, comfortable walking shoes. Fully wheelchair-accessible yachts can be arranged with advance notice.

Best season. Year-round, but April–October is the most reliable window; winter cruises run subject to sea conditions with covered saloons available on all vessels.
