Bursa and Uludağ Day Trip

A private day on the north-western slopes of Uludağ, combining Ottoman Bursa with Türkiye's most historic ski mountain.

Bursa is one of the most rewarding day trips from Istanbul — the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, seat of the earliest sultans, and the birthplace of much of the country's classical architecture. Uludağ, the mountain that rises directly above the city to 2,543 metres, is Türkiye's oldest national park and its principal winter resort. Together they make a genuinely varied full-day experience.

Early morning — the ferry crossing. After a hotel pickup, we drive to one of the eastern Marmara ferry terminals (Yenikapı or Pendik) for a fast-ferry crossing of the Marmara Sea. Ferry duration is around ninety minutes to two hours; we breakfast on board on the open deck with the Princes' Islands passing to starboard and the Marmara coast unfolding ahead.

Late morning — Ulu Cami and Bursa's Ottoman core. We arrive in Bursa mid-morning and begin at Ulu Cami (the Grand Mosque), a twenty-domed early-Ottoman prayer hall from 1399, with monumental calligraphy on every internal wall and a central ablution fountain — a unique arrangement in Ottoman architecture. A short walk brings us into the historic Kapalı Çarşı (covered bazaar) and the surrounding silk trading hans: the Koza Han for silk, the Emir Han for antiques, and the small nut hans lined with sacks of hazelnuts and dried apricots.

Midday — Green Mosque and Green Tomb. We continue by private vehicle to the Yeşil Cami (Green Mosque) and Yeşil Türbe (Green Tomb) — the finest early-Ottoman ensemble in the country, whose fifteenth-century turquoise tilework in the interior of both buildings has been continuously maintained since the reign of Mehmed I. A licensed local guide reads the tilework and the calligraphy in detail; it is one of the great pauses of the day.

Lunch — İskender Kebap. Bursa is the birthplace of İskender Kebap — thin-sliced grilled lamb over a bed of pide bread with tomato sauce, browned butter and yoghurt — and lunch is served at one of the historic founding houses of the dish in the old town. It is one of the great Turkish regional lunches.

Afternoon — Uludağ by cable car. After lunch, we take the Uludağ Teleferik (one of the longest cable cars in Europe) from central Bursa to the mid-mountain station at Sarıalan, and continue to the upper station near the ski resort at 2,200 metres. In winter, the mountain is under snow: a short optional snowshoe walk or a coffee on a sun terrace at the ski village is a signature part of the day. In summer, the alpine meadows are in wildflower and the temperature is fifteen to twenty degrees cooler than the city — walking loops of thirty minutes to two hours are available with the guide.

Return. We descend to Bursa by cable car in the late afternoon and re-cross the Marmara by fast-ferry, arriving at guests' Istanbul hotels in the evening.

How it runs. Private, air-conditioned vehicle with English-speaking driver-guide on the Bursa side; ferry crossings included; cable car ticket included; all mosque and museum entrance fees; a genuinely walkable pace with plenty of pauses. Modest dress is required for the mosque visits (shoulders and knees covered; head covers for women provided at the door). The mountain day is family-friendly, and children respond well to the cable car and the alpine walks; guests with mobility limitations can remain at Sarıalan or the summit café rather than walking the alpine loops.

Best season. Year-round. December–March for snow; April–June and September–October for wildflowers and the most comfortable walking conditions.
