Overview
The story
The Red Sea is one of the great snorkelling destinations of the world — a narrow, deep, salty sea with more than a thousand species of fish and more than two hundred and fifty species of coral, most of which can be seen from the surface without diving equipment. This private day out takes you to the reefs from Hurghada, El Gouna or Sharm El Sheikh, with a small-boat charter and a qualified snorkelling guide.
Morning: You are collected from your hotel at 08:00 and driven a short distance to the marina, where you board a private motor yacht — 12 to 18 metres depending on group size — with a captain, a snorkelling guide and a small crew. After a briefing on equipment, safety and the local marine environment, you sail out into open water toward the day’s first reef. Depending on wind and conditions the destinations can include Giftun National Park and the Mahmya lagoon (from Hurghada), the Tobia Arbaa house reefs (from El Gouna), or Ras Mohammed National Park and the reefs of Tiran (from Sharm El Sheikh). The reefs are graded — sheltered lagoons for first-time snorkellers, drop-offs for experienced snorkellers — and your guide will match the sites to your group.
You enter the water directly from the yacht, in warm, clear conditions where visibility routinely exceeds twenty metres. Highlights include large gorgonian fans, table corals, thickets of staghorn and fields of brain coral, patrolled by parrotfish, angelfish, wrasse, moray eels and the occasional passing turtle. The guide points out species, watches for currents and stays with the least experienced snorkeller.
Afternoon: You return to the yacht for lunch — a fresh grilled fish, rice, salad, bread and seasonal fruit, prepared on board — and then continue to a second reef in the afternoon, when the light is at its best and the fish are most active. Between snorkels there is time to sunbathe on the deck, kayak (on some vessels) and enjoy the quiet of open water. Non-swimmers can enjoy the day equally well; the sun deck, the sea breeze and the shallow lagoons are all welcoming.
Evening: You return to the marina by 17:00 and to your hotel shortly after. On request the day can be extended into a sunset sail with a beach barbecue at a private cove.
Photography is best with an underwater case or a small action camera; the reefs are very shallow and require no dive certification. Practical advice: use reef-safe sunscreen (regular sunscreen is prohibited in the marine parks); bring a wide-brim hat, a light long-sleeve top for the boat, and closed water shoes for reef edges. Family suitability is excellent from age six upward; children under six are safest on the boat and in shallow lagoons. Accessibility is limited — boarding and reef entry involve short steps and swimming. Best months are April through November for warm water; the winter months (December to March) are cooler but still swimmable. Wind cancellations are rare but possible; a same-day rebook or full refund is standard.
