Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks

A quiet, atmospheric half-day at the most photogenic corner of Boka Bay.

Perast is a single-street Baroque town of stone palazzi at the narrowest bend of the inner Bay of Kotor — a place with more churches than streets, a seafaring history stretching back to the sixteenth century, and, in the twin islands offshore, the most photographed image of Montenegro after Sveti Stefan. This private half-day tour is the definitive way to see it.

Morning — the drive to Perast. After a hotel pickup, we take the scenic bay road from Kotor or Dobrota to Perast — a fifteen- to twenty-five-minute drive along the water, past the sea captains' villas of Prčanj and the old shipyards. Cars stop at the entrance to the town; Perast itself is pedestrian.

Mid-morning — walking the old town. A licensed local guide walks us along the single stone promenade, reading the town from its buildings: the sixteenth-century Bujović Palace (now the Perast Museum, with a superb collection of naval instruments and paintings), the Baroque Church of Saint Nicholas with its 55-metre campanile, and the network of quiet lanes climbing the mountain behind the town. A pause for coffee on the waterfront, with the twin islands directly in front, is a signature part of the visit.

Late morning — Our Lady of the Rocks. A short private boat crossing (five minutes) brings us to the artificial island of Our Lady of the Rocks — one of the most poetic sites in the Adriatic. Local tradition holds that sailors, having discovered a miraculous icon on a rock here in the fifteenth century, spent centuries dropping stones and sinking ships around it to build the island by hand. Every July, on the feast of the Fašinada, the tradition continues: local boats sail out at sunset and drop stones around the island.

Inside the church, a licensed guide reads the extraordinary silver ex-voto plaques (each commemorating a specific sea voyage or storm), the seventeenth-century Baroque paintings by Tripo Kokolja, and the embroidered altar cloth famously worked by a single local woman over twenty-five years using her own hair when the silk ran out. It is one of the most emotionally charged small museums in the Balkans.

Return. We return to Perast by the private boat, take a final photograph of the twin islands from the campanile, and drive back to the hotel by late afternoon.
