Kotor Old Town Tour

A half-day walking tour inside a UNESCO-listed medieval city.

Kotor's old town is one of the best-preserved medieval urban complexes in the Mediterranean — a labyrinth of stone lanes, small piazzas, Venetian palazzi and Romanesque churches, contained inside walls that climb the mountain behind the city in a serpentine curtain of stone. This private half-day tour, led by a licensed local guide, is the essential introduction.

Morning — the Sea Gate and main square. We meet at the Sea Gate — the original entrance from the harbour — and step into the Square of the Arms, Kotor's ceremonial heart. Our guide reads the layered history of the town from the buildings themselves: Illyrian foundations, Roman roads, Byzantine walls, the four centuries of Venetian rule that shaped almost everything now visible, and the brief Austrian, French and Yugoslav chapters that followed.

Mid-morning — the cathedral and museums. We visit Saint Tryphon's Cathedral, a Romanesque masterpiece from 1166 whose stone reliquary chapel and gold-embossed altar are among the great cultural sights of the Adriatic. A short walk brings us to the Maritime Museum, housed in a Baroque palazzo, whose collection of navigational instruments, ship models and captains' portraits opens a window into Boka's extraordinary seafaring history.

Late morning — the Orthodox and Franciscan quarters. The old town's small piazzas each carry their own atmosphere: the Milk Square, the Salt Square, the Flour Square, each named for the goods once traded there. We visit the Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas, the Franciscan quarter and, for those who wish, the small piazza in front of the Church of Saint Luke — a twelfth-century Romanesque foundation shared for centuries by Catholic and Orthodox congregations.

Optional — the fortress climb. For guests who wish, the guide can lead a portion of the climb up to the San Giovanni fortress that rises behind the town. The full climb — 1,350 steps to the summit — takes roughly ninety minutes each way; a partial climb to the Chapel of Our Lady of Remedy (halfway up) is a much gentler alternative with equally spectacular views over the bay.

Return. The tour typically concludes with coffee on a quiet piazza and a hand-back to the guest, who is free to continue exploring at leisure.
