Luxor East Bank Tour

Luxor is the greatest open-air museum in the world, and its east bank — where the living city has always stood — holds the two temples that defined pharaonic religion for two thousand years: Karnak, the largest religious complex ever built, and Luxor Temple, its ceremonial counterpart on the Nile. This private half-day tour, expertly paced, lets you read both temples slowly.

Morning: You are collected from your Luxor hotel or cruise vessel at 07:30, before the temperatures rise and the coach groups arrive. Your Egyptologist opens the day at Karnak, the vast sanctuary of Amun-Ra that grew across two millennia into a stone city of its own. Entry is through the avenue of ram-headed sphinxes, past the first pylon of Nectanebo, into the Great Hypostyle Hall — one hundred and thirty-four columns each fifteen metres tall, some still bearing their painted decoration where the roof once sheltered them from sun and rain. Your guide interprets the reliefs — Seti I hunting in the north wall, Ramses II smiting the Hittites in the south — and takes you past the obelisks of Thutmose I and Hatshepsut, along the sacred lake, and into the smaller shrines and chapels that reward close reading.

Afternoon: After a break for lunch at your hotel or on the corniche, you continue to Luxor Temple in the late afternoon, timing your visit to the golden hour and to the illumination of the temple at dusk. Luxor Temple is smaller and more intimate than Karnak, and its architecture is best read in a single visit: the pylon of Ramses II with its seated colossi and single remaining obelisk (the other stands in the Place de la Concorde in Paris); the great colonnade of Amenhotep III; the reliefs of the Opet Festival, which show the annual procession of Amun from Karnak to Luxor by river; the Roman-era sanctuary at the far end, where Christian frescoes are still visible over pharaonic reliefs; and the Sun Court, best photographed as the light softens.

Evening: You return to your hotel or cruise vessel by early evening, in time for dinner. On request the tour can be extended to include the newly restored Avenue of Sphinxes — a three-kilometre processional way between Karnak and Luxor Temple, reopened to the public in 2021, best walked at sunset.

Photography is exceptional throughout. Karnak rewards early-morning light on the hypostyle columns; Luxor Temple rewards the moment when the sun sinks and the electric lighting takes over. Practical advice: dress modestly and lightly — the temperature difference between Cairo and Luxor is significant. A hat, sunglasses, water and comfortable shoes are essential. Family suitability is excellent from age six upward; children respond strongly to the scale of the hypostyle hall. Accessibility is good on the main axes of both temples; some side chapels involve steps. Best months are October through April; the December and January light on Karnak is remarkable.
