Antalya Coastal Experience

A full day along Antalya's Mediterranean shore, from Roman harbour to cascading waterfall.

Antalya is Türkiye's Mediterranean capital — an unusually complete city where Hellenistic walls, Roman gates, Ottoman lanes and modern marinas coexist within a compact and genuinely walkable footprint. This private full-day experience combines the historic core of Kaleiçi with the surrounding coastline, and closes with two of the most photographed waterfalls in the country.

Morning — Hadrian's Gate and Kaleiçi. After a hotel pickup, we begin at Hadrian's Gate, the monumental Roman arch built for the emperor's visit in 130 AD and preserved almost intact in the city walls. A licensed local guide walks us through the labyrinth of Kaleiçi, Antalya's old town: narrow lanes of restored Ottoman wooden houses, small stone hans, a Seljuk fluted minaret, the ruined Kesik Minare mosque and the small Ottoman clock tower on the main square. The pace is unhurried; we stop for Turkish coffee at a shaded café and for photographs at the classic viewpoints.

Late morning — Roman harbour and city walls. Kaleiçi descends to a small Roman harbour, now used by wooden day-boats. A gentle walk along the sea walls opens onto the cliff-edge Karaalioğlu Park, one of the great urban viewpoints of the Mediterranean — the Taurus Mountains rising directly from the sea in a snow-capped arc, even in summer. A short optional boat trip along the cliffs to see the lower waterfalls from the water can be added here.

Midday — Düden Waterfalls (Lower Düden). A short private transfer brings us to the Lower Düden Waterfalls, where the Düden river drops directly over cliffs into the Mediterranean — a genuinely dramatic sight, especially in the spring when meltwater from the Taurus swells the flow. Viewing terraces at the park allow safe photography from directly opposite the fall.

Lunch — a Kaleiçi konak. Lunch is a long, unhurried affair in a restored Ottoman konak inside Kaleiçi: mezes of hummus, muhammara, ezme and stuffed vine leaves, followed by grilled sea bass or a slow-cooked lamb tandır, ending with baklava and Turkish coffee. The tables are in a shaded courtyard and the pace is deliberately slow.

Afternoon — Antalya Museum. After lunch, we visit the Antalya Museum, one of the most important archaeological collections in Türkiye — Roman marble statuary from Perge (including the celebrated Weary Herakles), Byzantine icons, Bronze Age burials, and a full ethnographic wing on Ottoman Antalya. The visit is paced for one to two hours depending on interest.

Late afternoon — Upper Düden and Karpuzkaldıran. For a longer day, we can add the Upper Düden Waterfalls in a park inland from the city, or a sunset viewpoint at Karpuzkaldıran cliff-park south of Antalya, where the coast reads all the way to Belek and the Taurus mountains catch the last light.

Return. Guests are back at their hotel by early evening.

How it runs. Private, air-conditioned vehicle throughout; licensed English-speaking local guide inside Kaleiçi and the museum; all entrance fees; comfortable walking pace on cobbled lanes (comfortable shoes strongly recommended). The day is genuinely family-friendly — children respond well to the harbour, the waterfalls and the museum's Roman statuary — and suitable for guests of moderate mobility, with mostly gentle inclines and short walking sections.

What to wear. Light, breathable clothing in summer; a light layer for the sea breeze; comfortable walking shoes; a hat and sunglasses. Modest dress for mosque interiors (shoulders and knees covered; head cover for women is provided at the door of the fluted-minaret mosque). Swimwear if you plan an afternoon beach stop.

Best season. March–June and September–November are the most comfortable months for a walking-heavy day. July and August work with early departures and a longer museum midday break. Winter tours run on modified routes with waterproof preparation.
