Overview

The story

The St. Regis Cairo occupies a slender, art-deco-inspired tower on the Nile corniche in Boulaq, a short walk from the Egyptian Museum and, once complete, a straight run north to the Grand Egyptian Museum. It is the newest of the city’s flagship five-stars and, in the tradition of the St. Regis houses, delivers a level of formal service — butlers on every floor, silver tea trays at check-in, evening champagne saber — that feels drawn from another century.

Public spaces are lavish without being heavy. The lobby is a study in cream marble, Murano chandeliers and bronze; the Astor Lounge, on the mezzanine, is Cairo’s most convincing recreation of a Manhattan hotel bar, with Cognac trolleys and a long-limbed pianist most evenings. The Vendôme restaurant serves classical French cuisine; L’Orientaliste offers refined Egyptian and Levantine cooking on a Nile-view terrace; Sushi-San is the address for high-end Japanese in Cairo.

Guest rooms are among the largest in the city, starting at forty-five square metres and rising to a two-bedroom Presidential Suite that occupies an entire floor. All rooms face the Nile or the city grid; Nile-facing rooms should be requested at booking. Dressing rooms are walk-in, marble bathrooms feature soaking tubs and separate rainfall showers, and every category comes with the signature St. Regis butler service — packing, pressing, coffee at any hour, an unhurried presence you can call upon at will.

The Iridium Spa is one of Cairo’s largest, with a full menu of hammam rituals, couples suites and a hydrotherapy pool. A twenty-fifth-floor infinity pool looks out over the Nile toward Zamalek — the sunset here is remarkable. The fitness centre is fully equipped, and personal trainers can be arranged.

Service is the differentiator. The concierge team is fluent in the delicate choreography of a first visit — reserved viewing at the Egyptian Museum, private after-hours access at select galleries, discreet transfers to Giza — and equally comfortable staging a wedding proposal in a private felucca on the river.

The location suits travellers who want to walk to the Egyptian Museum, spend evenings in Zamalek’s cafés and cross the river easily to Giza. Families, honeymooners, corporate travellers on longer stays and repeat Cairo visitors curating a more refined experience will all feel at home. Between November and March the terraces are at their best; in high summer the twenty-fifth-floor pool remains the most agreeable place in the city. Insider tip: request a corner Grand Deluxe on floors 18 to 22 for the most complete Nile panorama and the finest afternoon light.
