Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor

The Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor is the grande dame of Upper Egypt: a Victorian palace hotel commissioned in 1886, opened in 1907 and set in seven hectares of botanical gardens on the east bank of the Nile, directly opposite the Theban necropolis. Howard Carter announced the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb from its terrace in 1922; Agatha Christie wrote here; kings, sultans and archaeologists have taken tea on the veranda for more than a century.

The hotel presents two personalities within a single estate. The Palace Wing preserves the original nineteenth-century architecture — grand staircases, gilt mirrors, hand-painted ceilings and enormous salons that open onto the gardens. The Pavillon Wing, added in the twentieth century and set apart in the grounds, provides quieter, more contemporary accommodation for families and long-stay guests. All Palace Wing guests enjoy access to both properties, but only Palace guests dine in the historic 1886 Restaurant.

Rooms in the Palace Wing are graded by view and by category, from Superior Garden View through Nile View to Luxury Rooms and signature suites. Interiors are traditional: high ceilings, four-poster beds, silk drapery and marble bathrooms; the best rooms open onto private balconies over the Nile with a direct line of sight to the Valley of the Kings.

The 1886 Restaurant is the palace’s finest, serving classical French cuisine under a domed ceiling with silverware, crystal and jacket-required service. The Royal Bar preserves the mahogany-panelled Edwardian atmosphere, with photographs of Carter and Carnarvon still on the walls. The Victorian Lounge is where afternoon tea is served on the terrace — the same terrace where the Tutankhamun discovery was announced. The pool bar and the garden pavilion offer relaxed all-day dining beside the palm-lined pool.

Facilities include a large outdoor swimming pool, a fitness centre, a tennis court, a small spa and a well-tended botanical garden. The library holds first-edition accounts of the great excavations. The hotel’s felucca is available for sundowner sailings from the private jetty.

Luxor Temple is a five-minute walk from the front door; Karnak is a short drive north; the Nile ferry to the west bank departs from the jetty across the corniche. The hotel is ideally suited to cultural travellers, couples, honeymooners and repeat Egypt visitors who want to feel the weight of Egyptological history under their feet. October through April brings ideal weather; December and January offer the coolest and clearest days for tomb visits.
