Overview

The story

Perched on a pink-granite promontory above the First Cataract of the Nile, Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan is quite simply one of the most romantic hotels in the world. Commissioned by Thomas Cook in 1899 to accommodate the growing traffic of European travellers into Nubia, it has since welcomed Winston Churchill, Tsar Nicholas II, Queen Noor, President Carter, Diana Princess of Wales and — most famously — Agatha Christie, who wrote large sections of Death on the Nile from its terrace.

The palace has been restored twice, most recently by Sybille de Margerie in 2011, and now presents two connected houses: the Palace Wing, drenched in Moorish detail, with hand-painted ceilings, marble fireplaces and vast salons; and the Nile Wing, added in the 1960s and refashioned in a lighter contemporary register. Both look onto the same extraordinary bend in the Nile, where sailboats have crossed for four thousand years and where the granite hills of Elephantine Island glow orange at sundown.

Rooms are graded by view rather than by size — Old Cataract View, Nile View and full Nile View — and rise to signature suites named for the hotel’s illustrious guests. The Agatha Christie Suite occupies the corner of the Palace Wing where she wrote; the Howard Carter Suite reflects the archaeologist’s taste for Nubian craftsmanship. Interiors mix walnut inlay, alabaster lamps and hand-woven kilims with generous marble bathrooms, dressing rooms and private terraces.

The terrace itself is the reason many travellers make the pilgrimage. Afternoon tea is served in the Christie tradition, with cucumber sandwiches, honey madeleines and a string quartet at sunset. 1902 is the palace’s formal restaurant, set in a moorish rotunda under a domed ceiling; Saraya offers Nubian and Levantine cuisine on the terrace; the bar pours a house cocktail that has been on the menu for a century.

The Sisley Spa is small but exceptional, with a hammam, treatment rooms overlooking the river and Nile-mud rituals drawn from Nubian tradition. Two pools thread the gardens; the upper pool sits at the level of the Palace terrace, and the lower pool is set into the granite closer to the water.

Location places you within reach of Philae Temple, the unfinished obelisk, Elephantine and Kitchener’s Island. Abu Simbel is a domestic flight or a full-day road excursion away. This is a hotel best experienced slowly — two or three nights minimum — and it suits couples, honeymooners, cultural travellers and photographers seeking the great romantic set-pieces of the Nile. October through April are the ideal months; the January light on the granite hills is extraordinary. Insider tip: book afternoon tea on the terrace at least a day ahead, and request a felucca sundowner from the hotel jetty.
