Overview

The story

Two of southern Albania's most photographed places in a single unhurried day.

Ksamil is a village of coves and pine-covered islets on Albania's southern tip — the closest point in the country to Corfu, and the reason so many visitors describe the water here as "Caribbean". Butrint, half an hour north, is a walled UNESCO archaeological park where Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian layers rest on top of one another beside a still lagoon. Together they make one of the richest and most rewarding day tours in the country.

Morning — Butrint archaeological park. After a hotel pickup, we arrive at Butrint mid-morning with a licensed archaeologist-guide. A walking loop of roughly two hours takes in the Greek theatre (still used for summer performances), the Roman forum, the sixth-century baptistery with its intact mosaic floors (visible on scheduled unveilings), the Venetian tower on the acropolis, and — for those who wish — a short ferry ride across the channel to the triangular Ali Pasha fortress.

Late morning — a coffee break in the shade. A short pause at the park café or the nearby Vivari channel, with pelicans overhead and fishermen mending nets on the water.

Lunch — Ksamil. We drive the short distance to Ksamil for a long fish lunch on the water — grilled sea bream, marinated octopus, salads from the garden, and the region's excellent white wine.

Afternoon — the Ksamil islands. After lunch, a small boat takes us across to the largest of the Ksamil islets for swimming and sunbathing on a beach reachable only by water. Time on the island is entirely yours: to swim, to lie in the sun, to walk the perimeter path with a coffee in hand.

Return. Guests are back at their hotel by early evening.

How it runs. A private, air-conditioned vehicle throughout; a licensed archaeologist-guide inside Butrint; all park entrance fees; a private boat crossing to the Ksamil islet. The tour combines a serious cultural visit with a genuinely restorative beach afternoon — the ideal single day for a Riviera stay.
