Berat Day Tour

A day inside Albania's UNESCO "town of a thousand windows".

Berat is a place that photographs cannot quite prepare you for. Terraced Ottoman houses climb both banks of the Osum river, their white façades pierced by grid after grid of dark timber windows — the effect that gave the town its poetic nickname. Above them, on a wide plateau, the walled Kalaja fortress still shelters a living neighbourhood of stone lanes, Byzantine churches and quiet courtyards. This full-day private tour is the ideal way to read the city slowly.

Morning drive. After a hotel pickup, we drive inland from Tirana or the coast through olive groves and vineyards, arriving in Berat mid-morning. Our first stop is the Kalaja citadel — twenty minutes uphill from the city — where a licensed local guide walks us through the Onufri Museum inside the Church of the Dormition. Onufri, the sixteenth-century master, invented a red pigment that has never been fully replicated; his icons here are among Albania's most important works.

Mid-morning — the walled town. Beyond the museum, the fortress is not a monument but a village. We wander stone lanes past the ruined mosque, the Byzantine Church of the Holy Trinity, and cliff-edge terraces with sweeping views over the Osum valley. Coffee in a family-run kafe on the citadel wall is a quiet highlight.

Lunch. We descend for a long lunch in one of Berat's most respected traditional restaurants — a menu built around Berat's own specialities: tavë kosi (baked lamb with yoghurt), homemade tagliatelle with wild mushrooms, and the town's excellent white wines from the Cobo and Kantina Nurellari estates just outside the city.

Afternoon — Mangalem and Gorica. The two riverfront quarters — Mangalem on the north bank and Gorica on the south — are Berat's signature image. A gentle walking route crosses the Ottoman stone bridge, threads the narrow alleys of Gorica, visits the King's Mosque and the Halveti Tekke, and finishes with a viewpoint from which both quarters can be photographed together in the late-afternoon light.

Optional — winery visit. Time permitting, we finish with a short private tasting at a local family winery, learning how Albanian varietals like Shesh i Bardhë and Vlosh are being revived after decades of state monoculture.

Return. Guests are back at their hotel by early evening.
