Gjirokastër Day Tour

A full day in Albania's UNESCO "stone city".

Gjirokastër rises in tiers of grey slate above the Drino valley, a hillside of stone-roofed Ottoman houses so uniform in colour and material that from below the town seems carved from a single rock. Its citadel, one of the largest in the Balkans, dominates the skyline; its old bazaar still hums with copper workshops and family-run inns; and its literary reputation — as the birthplace of Ismail Kadare — gives it a distinct intellectual weight. This private full-day tour is the definitive way to see it.

Morning — the citadel. After a hotel pickup, we arrive at Gjirokastër mid-morning and begin at the citadel. A licensed local guide walks us through the medieval walls, the cannon terrace overlooking the valley, the National Museum of Armaments, and the eerie fuselage of a downed American aircraft that has become a talisman of the Cold War years. The views from the ramparts, across the Drino to the mountains of Greece, are extraordinary.

Late morning — a traditional Ottoman house. We descend into the old town to visit one of Gjirokastër's tower houses — Skenduli House or the Zekate House — whose carved ceilings, mangal fireplaces and tiered wooden galleries are the finest domestic Ottoman architecture in the region.

Lunch — the old bazaar. Lunch is a long, slow affair in a traditional restaurant on the bazaar — qifqi (rice-and-mint balls, a Gjirokastër speciality), spit-roasted lamb, homemade byrek, and cool white wine from the nearby Libohovë hills.

Afternoon — Kadare's house and the bazaar. After lunch, a short walk brings us to the childhood home of Ismail Kadare — now a small museum — and time to browse the copperware, kilims and hand-carved wood of the old bazaar. Coffee on a shaded terrace closes the visit.

Optional — Antigonea or Blue Eye. If time and interest allow, we can add a stop at the Hellenistic ruins of Antigonea or at the Blue Eye spring on the return drive.

Return. Guests are back at their hotel by early evening.
