Blue Eye Spring Excursion

A day at the most photographed natural wonder in southern Albania.

The Blue Eye — Syri i Kaltër — is a karst spring so deep and so vividly coloured that it appears painted. Cold water rises from an underwater cave at more than six cubic metres per second, forming a pool whose centre glows a dark, almost midnight blue and whose edges shade to turquoise where the sunlight catches the stones. It is a genuinely uncanny place, and best experienced early and unhurried.

Morning — arrival at the spring. After a hotel pickup on the southern coast, we drive inland through the Muzinë valley and arrive at the Blue Eye by mid-morning, before the day-tripper coaches. A short forest walk (roughly ten minutes on a gentle path) brings us to the spring itself. A wooden viewing platform juts out over the pool, and time here is unhurried — we allow at least an hour for photography, contemplation and a coffee at the small forest café.

Midday — Mesopotam Monastery. A short drive brings us to the Byzantine monastery of Saint Nicholas at Mesopotam, an eleventh-century foundation whose external walls carry some of the most unusual carved reliefs in the Balkans — mythical creatures, saints and geometric knots. It is rarely busy and rewards a slow walking visit.

Lunch — a Riviera taverna. We continue south to a small village taverna near Ksamil or Butrint for a long lunch of grilled fish, garden vegetables, and the region's excellent olive oil.

Afternoon — optional add-ons. Depending on the season and your preferences, the afternoon can include a swim stop at Krorëz or Kakome beach, a short visit to the ruins of Phoenike above Sarandë, or a walk through the old Ottoman quarter of Sarandë harbour before returning north.

Return. Guests are back at their hotel in Vlora, Sarandë or on the Riviera in the early evening.

How it runs. A private, air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide, all park entrance fees, bottled water, and a pace tailored to the group. The spring itself is a short walk from the parking area — comfortable shoes recommended. Swimming in the Blue Eye is not permitted, but the day's second half is designed with a sea swim in mind.
