Overview

The story

A single day along Albania's most cinematic coast.

The Albanian Riviera is the country's calling card — a ninety-kilometre stretch of Ionian shore where the Ceraunian Mountains fall straight to the sea, ancient villages cling to the hillsides, and turquoise coves open one after another between headlands of grey stone and dark pine. This full-day private experience is the definitive way to see it.

Morning — the Llogara ascent. After a hotel pickup on the Vlora side, we climb the switchbacks of the Llogara Pass, gaining more than a thousand metres in twenty minutes. At the top, a walking pause among the black pines opens onto one of the most photographed panoramas in the Balkans — the Ionian curving south, Corfu shimmering on the horizon, and the first villages of the Riviera drawn in miniature below.

Late morning — Dhërmi and Vuno. The descent brings us to Dhërmi, a whitewashed village of stepped alleys and Byzantine churches above a long turquoise beach. We walk the upper village and take coffee in a shaded courtyard before continuing to Vuno, quieter and more traditional, and a first swim stop at Jale or Gjipe cove — the latter reached by a short walking path through olive groves.

Lunch — Himara. A long, unhurried lunch in a Himara fish taverna: grilled sea bream or bream tartare, marinated anchovies, freshly baked flatbread, local white wine, and the day's dessert of ricotta with wild fig or honey. Himara itself, half Greek in feel, rewards a slow post-lunch walk along the harbour.

Afternoon — Porto Palermo and Qeparo. The road south hugs the coast to Porto Palermo, where Ali Pasha's low, star-shaped fortress sits on a small peninsula in a hidden bay. A private guided visit brings the story of the region's Ottoman past to life. Time permitting, we continue to Qeparo's upper village — a near-abandoned stone hamlet with sweeping sea views — for one final photograph before turning back north.

Evening — return along the coast. The return over Llogara is spectacular in a different light, the sea turning silver and the mountains warming to gold. Guests are dropped at their hotel in Vlora or Durrës in the early evening.

How it runs. A private, air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide; entrance fees where applicable; bottled water on board; and a genuinely flexible pace. We rarely leave a village while guests are still enjoying it, and we don't rush anywhere.
