Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet is the only luxury hotel inside the walls of the historic peninsula — a former Ottoman-era neoclassical prison, restored with unusual care and reopened as a sixty-five-room five-star that sits within a two-minute walk of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace. It is arguably the most conveniently sited historic-city hotel in the Mediterranean.

The building is a defining part of the experience. The mustard-coloured façade, the arched cell doors converted into corridors, the central courtyard with its fountain and orange trees, and the vaulted breakfast room all date from the original prison of 1918. The restoration has kept the bones and added the luxury: fifty-four rooms and eleven suites, generously proportioned, most with courtyard views and several with direct sightlines onto Hagia Sophia.

Interiors are classic Four Seasons: warm palettes, tailored fabrics, Ottoman-inspired detailing without pastiche, marble bathrooms with deep tubs and walk-in rain showers, Nespresso, blackout curtains and quietly powerful climate control. The upper suite categories — Corner Suites and the Historic Peninsula Suite — add separate lounges, dining areas and, on the top floor, private terraces with unrivalled views of the domes and minarets of the old city.

The courtyard restaurant is a signature of Istanbul dining, especially in the warmer months when service moves out under the orange trees and into the fountain-cooled evening air. Menus draw from Turkish and Mediterranean traditions, breakfast is a proper leisurely spread of regional specialities, and afternoon tea is a genuinely worthwhile ritual. In-suite dining runs around the clock.

The property is small, so wellness is calibrated accordingly: a fitness centre, a Turkish hammam and sauna, and a small treatment suite for spa services. What it lacks in scale it makes up for in atmosphere — the hammam has been restored in local marble to a high standard.

Location is unbeatable for a cultural stay. Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern and the Blue Mosque are within a two-minute walk; Topkapı Palace is five; the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar are within ten to fifteen minutes; the Galata Bridge and Karaköy waterfront reachable easily on foot or by tram. Istanbul Airport (IST) is one hour to seventy-five minutes; Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) around sixty minutes.

Four Seasons Sultanahmet is best suited to couples, cultural travellers, honeymooners, photographers and any guest whose priority is the historic peninsula. It shows extraordinarily well in April–May and September–October, when the courtyard restaurant is open and the light on the Ottoman façades is at its finest, and remains genuinely rewarding through the winter months when the hammam and the courtyard-fireplace lounges come into their own.
