Bab Al Shams Desert Resort

Bab Al Shams — 'gateway of the sun' — is a low-rise Arabian fort-style resort set in the Dubai desert, roughly forty-five minutes from Downtown Dubai and around an hour from Dubai International Airport. It is Dubai's original desert retreat and has been progressively renovated and repositioned since its recent full refurbishment.

The property is designed to feel like a discovered fortress rather than a large resort. Rooms are arranged around courtyards, plazas and gardens; corridors are open to the sky; and public areas use natural materials, textured stucco, timber shutters and hand-woven textiles. Dune horizons open in every direction, and the pace of the resort is deliberately slower than a beach or city hotel.

Rooms and suites are recently refurbished, with either courtyard or dune views, private terraces or balconies, and family-friendly layouts on request. Signature suites include private plunge pools and outdoor majlis seating. The largest categories can accommodate small families or celebrating couples with generous outdoor space.

Dining is a highlight and worth planning around. Al Hadheerah is the resort's signature open-air Arabian restaurant, with live cooking stations, folkloric performances and dune-view seating; Ya Hala offers Levantine and Middle Eastern cuisine; and Al Sarab serves shisha and mezze from a rooftop terrace under the stars. A relaxed all-day restaurant covers breakfast, casual lunch and international menus.

Activities are what make the resort feel distinct. Sunrise camel treks, guided dune walks, falconry displays, archery, horse riding through the reserve and desert-drive experiences are all arranged in-house. The Satori Spa offers Middle Eastern-inspired treatments; there is a full-service pool and pool bar; and the resort is well suited to family programming during school holidays.

For guests who want to combine city and desert, Bab Al Shams works particularly well as a two- or three-night stay bookended by Dubai stays elsewhere. Airport, city and Abu Dhabi transfers are easily arranged. Because of the setting, guests should plan for early mornings and cooler-weather months if desert activity is a priority.

This resort suits couples on honeymoon, families with older children, and travellers who want a genuine Arabian atmosphere without leaving the emirate. Guests requiring high-energy nightlife or full urban amenities on the doorstep may prefer to combine it with a shorter city stay.
