Overview
The story
Wadi Shawka is a Hajar mountain valley 45 minutes from central RAK with a proper waymarked hiking trail — one of the very few in the UAE. The route is 4 km one-way with a gentle 180-metre ascent to a natural rock pool that holds water for most of the year. Your guide is a UIMLA-affiliated hiking leader who reads the geology (Oman ophiolite pushed onto the Arabian plate), points out the fossils in the limestone, and knows the shaded lunch spots. This is a real walk — sturdy shoes essential — but well within reach of anyone in reasonable fitness. Not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs.
