Overview

The story

A half-day drive through the older Ras Al Khaimah. You start at the National Museum, housed in the 18th-century Al Hisn fort — coral courtyards, Qawasim manuscripts and a small pearling collection. From there we drive up to Dhayah Fort, the last stand of the Qawasim rulers in 1819 and still the emirate's finest ridge-top view; the climb is short but steep, so trainers and water are essential. The tour ends in Al Jazirah Al Hamra, the pearl village abandoned in the 1960s when its fishermen followed better wages north. Coral-block houses, wind-tower ruins and a barrel-vaulted mosque are all still standing; your guide walks you through what each building was, and why the town emptied.
